This Antique "Jenny Lind" Saratoga Steamer Trunk has a lot of history, and makes me wonder of all the places it's been.

-

The story of Jenny Lind is real, and worthy of telling, 200 years after her birth. The photo in the corner of the "Girl & her Cat" is inside the trunk, and inspired me to research it.

-

Her life is a Cinderella tale, beginning with a vulnerable childhood and culminating in courage and unparalleled artistry.

-

Born in 1820 in Stockholm, unwanted, out of wedlock, to an alcoholic father and an abusive mother. She was placed with a foster family and discovered at the age of 8 while sitting in a window and singing to her cat. Suddenly, her life took a new direction.

-

Not only was Jenny Lind a brilliant singer, she charmed everyone she met and had numerous admirers of the cultural elite: author Hans Christian Andersen, and pianist Frédéric Chopin, to name a few.

-

“Jenny Lind fever” broke out; people queued for days for opera tickets, and bought Jenny Lind dolls and tableware featuring her portrait. When she arrived by ship in New York a few years later, for an American tour arranged by P.T. Barnum, she was welcomed by 30,000 fans. When they saw her custom made trunks she had made in London, they were soon copied by trunk makers all over America. ( I copied her story from Konserthuset Stockholm website)
